About Sam

Sam Munslow

ADHD Coach. Mental Health Speaker. Workplace Wellbeing Specialist.

In 2016, I hit a wall at work so hard I couldn't ignore it any more. Turns out, that wall was a door.

I resigned from my job as a school deputy head with no plan and no safety net. Just a very clear sign that something had to change.

What followed was the messiest, most instructive decade of my life. I built Blue Monkey Coaching from nothing, found my people, and at 52 finally got an ADHD diagnosis that made everything click into place.

The moment everything made sense

I spent decades being told I was too much. Too loud, too easily distracted, too disorganised. I worked harder than anyone around me just to keep up, and still felt like I was failing.

Getting an ADHD diagnosis didn’t fix any of that overnight. But it gave me a framework for understanding myself. The mess started to make sense. The things I disliked about myself turned out to be the things that make me good at what I do.

“You’re not broken. You don’t need fixing. You’re perfect in an imperfect way.”

This is what I wish someone had said to me thirty years ago. And it’s what I say to every client I work with now.

Why Highways? Why men's mental health?

I came from a family of men who don’t talk about that kind of thing. I know what it looks like when someone is struggling and has nowhere to put it. I also know that a poster in a welfare cabin and a helpline number are not going to cut it.

Every year, around 90 Highways workers in the UK die by suicide. Those are our colleagues, brothers and dads.

When I speak on site or at a conference, I don’t show up with corporate polish. I show up as someone who speaks plainly and sticks around for the conversations that happen afterwards. That’s where the real work begins.

What I do now

Through Blue Monkey Coaching, I work with individuals, teams and organisations to clear the headblocks getting in the way of clarity, confidence, and good leadership. Some of my clients work on Highways contracts, from operatives on live roads to the managers carrying the weight of the whole contract. Some are neurodiverse people who’ve spent their whole lives wondering why the world felt harder for them. Some are both.

I coach one to one, run workshops and training events, and speak on stage. I also write a monthly wellbeing column for Highways Magazine, and my first book, The Little Book of ADHD Freedom, was published in 2025.

A bit of what that looks like in practice:

The person behind the coaching

I live in Somerset with my husband Jon, our four children, two dogs, eight chickens and Patrick the tortoise. Life is rarely quiet, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Outside work, you’ll find me walking the Somerset countryside, kayaking somewhere coastal in our campervan, or unwinding with a decent glass of Rioja.

Jon works in Highways consultancy, which means I have an unusually good sounding board when I need more perspective on the industry.
