Speaking
Keynotes - Stand-down talks - leadership days - conferences
Highways is male-dominated, safety-critical, and still has a culture where asking for help can feel like weakness. Sam has worked in Highways for years, precisely because she understands how that culture works and knows how to reach the people inside it.
Sam has spoken to rooms of 200 workers in hi-vis who came in sceptical and left with someone they’d trust enough to call. She’s presented at senior leadership forums, health and safety conferences, and welfare cabin sessions alike.
She doesn’t read slides. She tells stories, makes space, and always sticks around for the conversations that happen afterwards. That’s where the real work begins.
“Sam stepped in at the last minute to speak about wellbeing at the RSTA conference… Following her presentations, delegates have applied her suggestions, and this has made a positive difference in the mental wellness of the road workers.”
– Susanne Ingham, Executive Officer, LCRIG

The Big Interview
Sam was featured in Highways InProfile, Highways Magazine’s annual publication, talking to Dominic Browne about permission, mental health and the sector she’s spent years trying to change from the inside.
She doesn’t hold back: from leaving teaching after burnout, building Blue Monkey Coaching from nothing, and the moment on stage that led to founding HMHA, the Highways Mind Health Association. It’s an honest, unfiltered read, including the story behind the nickname that started it all: “permission.”
“It’s about finding what the problems are. Once we’ve understood the problems, the solutions are there.”
Sam Munslow, HMHA
Monthly wellbeing columnist – Highways Magazine
Sam has written a monthly wellbeing column for Highways Magazine since 2022, addressing the mental health challenges facing workers and managers in Highways. The column cuts through jargon to reach the people who need it most.
Wellbeing awards judge
Sam has served as a judge for industry wellbeing awards, assessing programmes on genuine impact rather than presentation. She will be doing so again. It’s a role that reflects her commitment to standards in workplace mental health.
Working Mum of the Year – previous finalist
Nominated anonymously and selected as one of the four UK finalists by Pitman Training. An unexpected honour that reflected how others saw the work Sam was doing in coaching and her community at the time.
